Teide National Park – The Heart of Tenerife You’ll Fall in Love With

View of Mount Teide, the highest mountain in Spain, on Tenerife

In the heart of the island of Tenerife rises Pico de Teide, the highest mountain in Spain (3,718 m) and one of the largest volcanoes in the world. Visiting Teide National Park is one of the greatest experiences the Canary Islands have to offer. This Martian-like natural landscape attracts not only tourists but also scientists from around the world.

New Paid Entry to the Park

Starting in 2025, Tenerife is introducing an ecological tax of up to €25 to help protect the park's fragile environment. The fee will vary depending on the length of stay and place of residence—Tenerife residents can enter for free. Similar measures are common in countries like the USA and Canada and are designed to ensure that this unique natural environment is preserved for future generations.

Teide: A Place Where You Touch the Clouds

Hiking the Montaña Blanca or Telesforo Bravo trails offers breathtaking views of the entire island and the Atlantic Ocean. The Izaña Observatory, located at over 2,300 meters above sea level, is one of the best places in the world for stargazing—its clear skies and more than 3,500 hours of sunshine annually make Teide literally a gateway to the universe.

Unique Flora and Fauna

Teide National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage site, covering an area of nearly 19,000 hectares. Here, you can find hundreds of endemic plants—for example, the Teide bugloss, whose red flowers can grow up to three meters tall, or the Teide white broom, whose white blossoms cover the slopes during the flowering season. The area is also home to endemic lizards, bats, and insect species that cannot be found anywhere else in the world.

How to Get to the Park

From the southern part of the island—areas such as Costa Adeje, Playa Paraíso, or Los Cristianos—daily tours and buses depart for the national park. It is best to plan your visit early in the morning, when temperatures are pleasant and the roads are less crowded. To reach the summit itself, a permit is required, which can be reserved online, and the ecological tax now applies to selected trails.

Tenerife: Where Nature Meets Lifestyle

Many people who visit Teide fall so in love with Tenerife that they decide to move here or invest in property. The island offers not only breathtaking nature but also a stable climate, safety, modern infrastructure, and an international community.

Local Tip

The best views of Teide can be enjoyed from the Mirador de Chipeque or Mirador de Samara viewpoints. After your hike, treat yourself to a coffee at a traditional café in Vilaflor, the highest village in the Canary Islands—just a few minutes’ drive from the volcano.

In Conclusion

Teide National Park is not just a tourist attraction but a symbol of Tenerife. It showcases the contrast between the fiery energy of the volcano and the calm of the ocean—the same contrast that makes the island so unique as a place to live.
